2025 Refrigerant Changes: All Your Questions Answered

An Overview of the New Refrigerant Regulations

Starting in 2025, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will phase out R-410A refrigerant in favor of the more eco-friendly R-454B. This shift is part of a larger effort to reduce the environmental impact of harsher refrigerant variants. R-454B, a new refrigerant with a lower global warming potential, will gradually become the industry standard for air conditioning systems.

This means that the majority of HVAC systems currently relying on R-410A will eventually be phased out, making way for more efficient and sustainable cooling solutions. For homeowners, it’s essential to understand how these changes could affect your existing system’s maintenance and potential future repairs.

How These Changes Affect Universal’s Customers

The upcoming refrigerant regulations will have some impacts on our customers, particularly for those with older systems. Here’s what to expect:

  • Limited availability of New R-410A Systems: While R-410A systems will still be accessible in the coming years, supplies will decrease over time. If your system is aging or needs frequent repairs, you may want to consider an upgrade in the coming months.
  • Potential savings with newer systems: The newer refrigerant, R-454B, offers greater efficiency, which means greater energy savings. Although we are unfortunately anticipating a 15% - 25% increase, upgrading to a system that uses R-454B should lower your utility bills over time, which is the silver lining to this major industry transformation.

Universal Heating & Cooling is committed to helping our customers navigate these changes smoothly, whether you’re looking to maintain your current system or explore options for a new one.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Will I need to replace my current air conditioner if it uses R-410A?

No, you don’t need to replace your system right away. R-410A will still be available for repairs and maintenance.

2. How long will R-410A be available for servicing my system?

R-410A is expected to remain accessible for repairs for several years, though it will gradually phase out as supplies decrease. However, Universal Heating & Cooling will do our best to keep repair and refill costs reasonable as this transition takes place. If you have questions, please give us a call.

3. Are there financial incentives for switching to a newer system with R-454B?

Starting in January 2025, there may be rebates and tax incentives available for upgrading to a new system with R-454B refrigerant. Incentives may be offered as rebates from manufacturers or incentives from state and local organizations, so please feel free to give us a call after January 15th to confirm what offers are available in your area. Our team will be happy to help you take advantage of any savings!

4. Can I retrofit my current system to use R-454B instead of R-410A?

Unfortunately, R-454B is not compatible with older systems designed for R-410A. To use R-454B, you would need to invest in a new system specifically built for this refrigerant.

5. Are there still 410A systems still available for installation?

Absolutely, 410a is still available and still ready to be installed until the new changes go into effect in early January 2025.
